Gigi Dover's new CD, Last Train Home coming to Asheville, Concert dates for Belleville Outfit

Gigi Dover and the Big Love have a brand new CD ~~~ NOUVEAU ~~~ do out soon. They have been working on it for about a year. They have a few tunes loaded on their myspace page. Check out this link for upcoming shows in the area. They'll be in the studio in early June to tell us all about the CD and upcoming shows. I'm looking forward to seeing them and many other bands at the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival .

Award winning roots rock band Last Train Home is making a stop at the Grey Eagle in Asheville on June 7th. They are supporting their brand - new CD "Last Good Kiss" on Eric Brace's own Red Beet Records. Their video is on CMT's top 20 and their music is building on the Americana radio charts. Don't miss the chance to hear them in person! Eric was in the studio a few weeks back and folks are still talking about it!

"One of the country's most formidable roots rock bands." -- Peter Cooper, The Tennessean

Many of you may know that the Deschamps band has metamorphosed into a new band called The Belleville Outfit. They were recently in Austin, TX recording and are now out on tour through the end of June. Listed below are the tour dates. I plane to see them at the BBQ Fest and hope to catch them at the Purple Onion or Evening Muse. And then there's the annual show at the Music Camp in Spartanburg! I made it out to that last year and I'm still talking about how good it was! They are one of the finest bands with ties to the area and the oldest one is only 23!

Bob Dylan

Thursday is Bob Dylan's Birth Day. Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman) was born on May 24, 1941. That would make him 66! In 2004 Rolling Stone Magazine named him #2 on the list of 100 greatest artist of all time with only the Beatles ranked higher.
We will, of course, be playing lots of Dylan and yes he will be the featured artist on tomorrow's 1 O'clock Block Party.

Artists in the studio

Here is a quote about Amy LaVere

"a Southern girl thumping a doghouse bass bigger than she is and singing in a woozy, whispery voice that casts an intoxicating spell… "-The Chicago Tribune

Amy LaVere and her fine band (with connections to Leonard Cohen and BR549) made it by the studio and really showed off some of the excellent material on the new CD, Anchors and Anvils.

I already liked the CD but after the interview my respect for this recording went way up. We have been playing a few songs from the CD and after today we will be adding more. So, tune in and call in with your requests for Amy.
Amy and crew are so nice and sweet. I hope to post some in studio pictures on this blog soon. They played tonight at the Gray Eagle in Ashville. They opened up the show for Robinella. Did anyone make it out to see them? If so, I'd love to here from you.
Amy and band played Frisbee out in front of the studio before they went on air, Amy found a Goose feather that made its way to her hair for the interview.

Speaking of artists in the studio, The Hackensaw Boys will be in the studio tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. Really been looking forward to this. If you haven't heard them, they play a blend of old-time and bluegrass-tinged string-band music. The Boys are getting ready to put out a new CD called Look Out and I'm hoping to hear some new tunes as well as my favorite "Fiddle My Blues Away". They will be playing at the Grey Eagle tomorrow night.

Adrienne Young and Sustainable Farming

A Press Release from Adrienne Young

ADRIENNE YOUNG CULTIVATES SUSTAINABLE FARMING AWARENESS WITH NEW CD, ROOM TO GROW. Singer/songwriter/activist's third album set for May 22 release. Guests include Will Kimbrough, Mike Gordon (Phish), Gordon Stone and Dale Ann Bradley.

Young, together with the Food Routes Network which she has represented nationally since 2004, have formed an alliance with the American Community Garden Association. Working with these national non-profits based in Philadelphia and Boston, Young will donate a portion of every record sold to a newly established fund. Proceeds will support local farming efforts in a variety of ways, from supplying non-GMO organic seeds to community gardens, to assisting progressive agricultural entrepreneurs. FoodRoutes executive director Tim Schiltzer is excited about the partnership and feels confident that Young continues to be the appropriate national figure for the organization's mission. "We are very fortunate to have the energy and commitment to our cause from someone as special as Adrienne," Schlitzer says. "FoodRoutes mission is to revitalize local food systems all over the United States. We do this by working to connect family farms and local consumers together in a way that helps each other through our Buy Fresh Buy Local program. Adrienne's music is one way to introduce our mission both to farmers and the public. We could not ask for a better spokesperson who not only helps spread the word but also leads by example in her contributions to community based food systems." In the fall, Young will unveil an inaugural sustainable living tour featuring eco-vendors, educational workshops on self-sufficient living practices, national live music acts as well as local artists and artisans representing the traditions specific to their region. One of Young's goals is to acquaint people with the resources available in their own backyards. "Our intention is for this tour to affirm the power inherent in tightly bound communities, by reinvigorating an awareness of and affection for local neighborhoods, cultures and economies."

Cuz's Corner for May 2007

Cuz’s Corner – May 2007

As I write this May edition of Cuz’s Corner, I have to admit that my senses are still overwhelmed by all the music I heard at Merlefest last weekend. As usual the musical choices were beyond eclectic, ranging from 4 days of old time traditions & demonstrations in the traditional tent to a very respectful set of music on the main stage by Elvis Costello. I guess my absolute highlight among many would have to be the long awaited reunion on stage of Pat Flynn, John Cowan, Bela Fleck & Sam Bush, better known and loved as the New Grass Revival. Their rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues” brought the massive Saturday night crowd to its feet and tears to my eyes. (I was not alone!) Another impressive aspect of this year’s festival was how many fantastic young bands and performers there were at this year’s festival. I guess the main thing that I took home from this year’s Merlefest was the fact that acoustic music may be perhaps the best shape it’s ever been since the big folk scare of the 60’s. Some of the young groups I really enjoyed included; the fresh old time sounds of Uncle Earl; the Joe Thompson mentored Carolina Chocolate Drops; the fresh bluegrass sounds of the Infamous Stringdusters: the stunningly odd interpretations of traditional music by Crooked Still; 15 year old mandolin whiz, Sierra Hull: the blistering bluegrass of Cherryholmes; the unbelievable fiddle techniques of the Wayback’s 23 year old Warren Hood. These kids have learned well the techniques of the present day masters & I have no doubts that they will also take the music through this century and beyond. Although their interpretations are new and fresh, none of these young performers lose sight of the traditions – the state of the music is in fine hands!
My friends will find this hard to believe, but I don’t think I’ve listened to any music since Merlefest and anyone who has ever been will understand the reason why. However, there are a couple of cds I did listen to before heading up to Wilksboro I would like to share with you. Although it may be odd reviewing a rock record in a CFS newsletter, I highly recommend the new effort by Son Volt, which is perched at number one on the AMA charts at the moment. Jay Farrar has written a batch of songs, which I feel are as much in the Woody Guthrie tradition as any that I’ve heard in a while. If you are yearning for rock & roll with powerful lyrics & a consciousness, you may want to check this one out. (www.sonvolt.net) Imagine two old friends pulling out their guitars & singing the songs everybody in the room knows by the fireplace on a winter’s night. Well, that is exactly the feeling you get listening to the new one from John Prine & Mac Wiseman called “Standard Songs for Average People”. (www.johnprine.net) You’ll find such timeless songs here such as “Blue Eyed Elaine”, “Saginaw Michigan”, “Death of Floyd Collins”, and “Pistol Packin’ Mama”. Mac Wiseman is in great voice on this one as is John Prine and I think if you are a fan of duet singing, this one may be in your collection for years to come! Well, that’s about it for this month, but next month I’m expecting new ones from Adrienne Young, Richard Shindell and more. I will also give you folks the where & when of a Charlotte appearance of old time phenomenon Uncle Earl in June. Also, be sure to come out and experience the Gospel Jubilators at the next CFS gathering on the 11th of the month – they blew people away at Merlefest and are my gig of the month! In the meantime, go out & catch some live music at a venue near you and have a great spring. CUZ

Amy LaVere and Volatile Baby

Volatile Baby came by the studio today. The band out of Charlotte has just finished up their new CD with help from David Chliders and the Modern don Juans, Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter Cash, Jim Brock, former drummer for Kathy Mattea, Don Dixon and Wayne Jernigan. They brought along a friend and fellow cast member from the new production 0f "Wildwood Flowers" . The memories of June, Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters are showcased in this play. The talents of Volatile Baby are on display as this play features such songs as “Ring of Fire” and “Keep on the Sunnyside.” Their new CD, "Traveling Light", which is sort inspired by the play, has just arrived in their hands and they brought a copy for the station. We've already started playing it! We also got them to record quick live versions of "Ring of Fire" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" for us. They tell us the CD will be on sale at their gigs and at Wildwood. They also have plans for a CD release party later in the Month.

May23rd in studio with Amy LaVere.

Amy came out with a very good first solo album in 2005. It was called "This World is Not My Home." She was out doing the radio promo stuff and came by the studio for a live performance. I like the CD but seeing her live won me over. I've been a fan from that day. I'm vary happy that her new CD "Anchors and Anvils" has now arrived on my desk. Amy is now going out on the road for a seven week tour in support of the new release. In a couple of weeks we will have her stop by the wgwg studios again for more great live music. I'll let you know when we have the time firmed up.

Cuz's Corner - March 07

(The following column first appeared in the Charlotte Folk Society March 2007 Newsletter)
by Dennis "Cuz" Frost
As predicted, the holiday-related drought for new releases has evolved into an avalanche of highly anticipated CDs from both established artists and young up-and-comers alike. Before I get into some of my favorites, without a doubt, my gig of the month was the sold out Gillian Welch and David Rawlings show at the Neighborhood Theatre (on 2/15/07). It’s extremely difficult to put into words exactly what it is about a Dave-Gill performance that transcends into high art. Is it Gillian’s songs that sound old as the hills? Or could it be David’s oddly, wonderfully, and unique guitar style? Perhaps it’s the two-part harmony vocals that blend into one voice? Whatever it is, I cannot get enough of it. Be on the lookout for a new CD from Gillian and David in the not so distant future. If there was ever a time to trade in those record store gift certificates you got for Christmas – now is the time! My first recommendation comes from The Carolina Chocolate Drops – three young folks that met at the black banjo convention in Boone last year. Their brand new release Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind (Music Makers) not only carries on the black string band tradition of the great Joe Thompson, but also touches on other traditions, including celtic, bluegrass and gospel. To quote Taj Mahal, “the Carolina Chocolate Drops can really play, their music is electrifying.” When big Taj talks, I listen and you should too! Be sure to check them out this spring at either Merlefest or LEAF (Lake Eden Arts Festival). Martha Scanlan's new CD, The West Was Burning (Sugar Hill), is a lush blend of gorgeous, mostly original acoustic tunes steeped in all the American roots traditions she grew up loving. This one was lovingly produced in Martinsville, Louisiana by none other than Dirk Powell. Special guests include Levon Helm and his daughter Amy Helm of Ollabelle fame. Jorma Kaukonen's new disc, Stars in My Crown (Red House), is an extremely satisfying follow-up to his last effort Blue Country Heart. His new effort mixes originals, covers, and a healthy mix of depression-era gospel tunes into a very spiritual feeling piece of music. I love Jorma’s guitar playing, what can I say! I must say I was a bit skeptical when I heard Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby were putting out a disc together, but their self-titled release really works for me. This one is a combination of traditional tunes Ricky Skaggs arranged with new incarnations of some Hornsby originals. The bluegrass versions of “Mandolin Rain” and “Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues” really work for me, but the jury is still out on the kinky bluegrass version of “Super Freak”. They’ve got gumption for giving this one a go, I must admit! If you don’t have any Patty Griffin music in your collection, shame on you! Her brand new album, Children Running Through (ATO/RCA), might just be a great place to start. This one has everything a folk music lover could ever ask for – unbelievable songs, ethereal instrumental arrangements, and that signature voice. Only Patty Griffin could start a song with the line “little pink dress hanging by her knees” and then proceed to tell the emotional life story of the main character in the song, while at the same time relating it to the universal female experience. This is my pick of the month and I’m sticking to it! One of my musical highlights for the month was an on-ar interview and performance by the two Aussies and one Brit, better known as The Greencars. They have an up-and-coming release called Viridian (Dulatone) that gets the “Cuz Seal of Approval”. If you like your ballads tender, but your pickin’ hot, this one’s for you! Last but not least, the new effort from Los Lobos, The Town and the City (Hollywood) return them to the Latin groove that I fell in love with when I first heard “Kiko and the Lavender Moon”. This one backs off quite a bit from the harder rock sounds of their last two or three albums and is a satisfying effort. All I can say is that there is too much music and too little time. I hope you enjoy these picks, but most importantly, I hope you get out and check out some shows - as it’s all about the live performance.
Have a great early spring!

Sons of Bill

The Sons of Bill are a young Country Rock Band from Charlottesville, Virginia. They have been together for about two years now. Three of the five members are brothers. The Wilson brothers are joined by Seth Green and and Jonathan Flax. Their debut CD is called A Far Cry From Freedom and I highly recommend it. Metaphysical Gingham Gown is a song that is already getting the phone to ring at the station, Roll On Jordan and Savannah Rain are favorites as well. Check this one out. I think the band has a big future and I look forward to there next release that their website says should be out in early 2008.

Rowan and Rice, The Duhks and Merlefest

Peter Rowan and Tony Rice are, of course, both legends. They have recorded and performed together before but recently they teamed up for a wonderful CD call Quartet. They are joined by bassist Bryn Davies and mandolin player Sharon Gilchrist. If you love acoustic music, rooted in but by no means limited to, bluegrass this is a must for your collection. The CD contains a new version of Midnight Moonlight that is just masterful. Guardian Angels is another must hear and the song Perfection is, well, perfect!

I got to see Peter and Tony live at this year's Merlefest and it was one of my highlights of the weekend. I also got a chance to hear the Duhks twice at Merelfest. I consider myself a member of the Flock, as Duhk fans are called, so I was more than a little worried when I realized they had a new lead singer. The two sets I caught put my worries to rest and I can say the Duhks are still the Duhks and I'm still one of the Flock.

New Music

John Prine is one of my musical heroes. John has a new CD out with Mac Wiseman. It's called "Standard Songs for Average People". Link here for John's website and a list of reviews of the new CD.

Son Volt is touring the Western Carolinas in support of their new CD "The Search".

5/15 at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC
5/16 at the Visulite in Charlotte, NC
6/16 at the Handlebar in Greenville, SC

Click here for new video of Son Volt live in California late March.

Elizabeth Cook's brand new CD, "Balls", has been released. It was produced by the one and only Rodney Crowell. I've heard some of Elizabeth's earlier work and I like it well enough but this CD really stands out from the crowed. Good stuff here if you like good old twangy country, and I do! Here is a slightly twisted video of the title track from youtube.

May 30 Elizabeth will be at the Handlebar in Greenville, South Carolina.

Chris Knight's new/old CD is out. I was slow catching on to the Chris Knight band wagon. Don't really know how I missed it but I did. Then I heard "William's Son" and it really got my attention. I found lots on the last CD to peek my interest and this lead me back to the song "William". I was hooked. Now the new release takes us back to where it all began in 1996. That year Chris Knight sat down in his trailer and recorded some songs. Most of these songs were not released on the later studio stuff. I'm glad they went back and released this stuff. If you like simple, down to earth Americana this is it.
